The MOST Frustrating (Scary) Day Of My Life
Yesterday morning Ryan and I left to grab presents for the secret Santa thing her basketball team does. After bringing that stuff home we ran to the grocery store to pick up a few items and when we got back about 3pm Craig said Kyra had gone up to the school to ride her scooter. Its really the only thing she does outside. When she wasn't back at 5pm I just had a bad feeling, so I jumped in my truck at 5:10 to drive around the block and look at the school. She wasn't there. I came in and told Craig who gave it another 20 minutes and went to look for her himself. When I didn't see him a couple minutes later I knew... this wasn't going to be just an accidental thing.
I hate saying this but Kyra has never earned the trust it takes to go further than the school. Yes, we've taken her to friends homes but she isn't like most kids who go and hang out in their neighborhood as a kid and get their circle slowly widened.
We knew she had talked to her ex-boyfriend, Travis, earlier in the day so we called his dad who told us that Travis had gone to the school to meet Kyra. Great, they were both missing. Sometime around 6:30 or 7 we went to the police department and filed the necessary paperwork. Several times throughout the night we'd pass them shining their lights in various places. They were definitely looking for them. By 9 or 10 I called Austin at work to come help look and he left early to go pick up friends and get them to help (10 of them came to help!!!) and even one of their parents came.
About 12:30 I called Craig on his cell and while talking to him he heard Austin yell, "Ive got 'em!" So I drove to this place by the highschool (all of 6 blocks from our house) that is basically a cow pasture with an abandoned house on it. Kyra and Travis were sitting in the dark (Kyra didn't even have a jacket) freezing their asses off. Craig and I had been there earlier in the day where we ran into Travis' parents there. I thought the dad looked through there when we were standing there but I guess he only went behind it.
SO anyway, Craig asks Kyra why she didn't say anything when we were there and she said she didn't know. We load the kids up into the cars and go to the police station where they really talked to the kids about not only the dangers of what they did but also the fact that they could have been taken to juvenile hall. After about 2 hours we came home. I started asking Kyra some questions and she blurted out that she DID know we were there. Lies, lies, lies.
So what finally came out was that she had broken the rules and went somewhere without telling us AND missed curfew so she got scared of getting in trouble and decided to make the most of it.
Craig was beside himself all night, almost sick. Ryan bawled her eyes out all night. Austin didn't know what to think. I'm just glad they're both ok, but now I'm pissed.

Oh my. I'm so glad that she was okay. Tim and I had a similar incident years ago when we took his 16-year old sister to Lake Tahoe with us. She said she was going "down the hill" and ended up driving to Reno with her friends. Oh my was Tim PISSED at her for a long time.

I told Ashley that if she ever decided to do something like that I was going to make her go on Maury Povich show!
So far she has not snuck out or broken curfew. :)
