Lots going on

9-22-05

Don't ask me where I've been. Mostly, I've been in bed, sick as a dog. We've all had some bug and just when we think we've shaken it, it's back... better than ever.

Austin is doing ok in college, but I think it's been harder on him than he was prepared for. We're having to take control of his credit card because he has gone crazy with it. He keeps eating out even though we bought the 15 meal plan. That meal plan shit really pisses me off. It cost us $1565 for him to have 15 meals a week for this semester. That's a ridiculous cost, and he pushes my button by going out to eat every day. His meal plan cost as much as his dorm did. We're going to apply for him to get in the newer dorm next semester. It's more expensive but each student has their own space and it's divided by a bathroom and kitchen area, while the one he's in now is just a bunkbed with two desks and two dresses... no bigger than a closet, really. He's got all his fraternity stuff going on and I'm trying not to worry about that.

Ryan is having a tough time today. The volleyball team really isn't that good, and she was one of only 4 returning varsity players... the others all graduated. So we knew this was going to be a tough year, but we didn't expect the attrition that's prevalent now. Three people quit the team today... two of them were the captains. She's really feeling hurt and confused and not sure what to do. I've encouraged her to step up and be a leader because the other girls are feeling the same way, I'm sure.

I'm having surgery on my on October 5. What is that, next Monday? Shit... more pain. I'm just tired of not being able to use it. Austin's hand is worse than ever and he can't even close it. The doctor did the surgery on it and smoothed out the cartilige that was torn up but now the finger has no ability to move. Austin is very depressed about it and we're hoping that the specialist he's going to see will be able to help. I'm essentially having the same surgery as Austin (even with the same doctor) but the difference is my problem involves the 5th MP (metacarpal-phalangeal) joint (the pinky) while his is the 4th... thereby limiting the use of the 3rd and 5th, rendering his left hand useless. I'm 38 years old, so if I loose the use of mine it's not so bad. But he just turned 18... everything he enjoys doing, be it sports or working on cars, is in jeopardy. Right now, he can't do any of it.

Basically, I'm frustrated and feeling a bit overwhelmed. In the last two weeks, I've slept an average if 18 hours a day. I guess it's safe to self diagnose depression. Blah. G'night. kdgr
